Disaster Contingency Planning

Careful preparation and planning has helped BEC to recover rapidly from serious events and threats that prevent us from continuing normal operations throughout our organization. Our aim is to recover from such incidents in the minimum amount of time, with minimum disruption and at minimum cost. This requires, in many ways, the involvement of staff members throughout the organization as well as key external agencies listed below.

National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA)

The Government of the Bahamas established the National Emergency Management Agency to coordinate the preparedness, response to and mitigation of emergencies on a national level through collaboration, cooperation, coordination, between government and non-governmental agencies. BEC continues to support NEMA and provide support during preparedness, response and mitigation activities.

 

CARILEC

BEC is a member of an association of Electrical Utilities known as CARILEC. This association was formed out of collaboration between utilities of CARICOM Nations, but has associate members from other countries throughout the world.

Members of CARILEC assist one another in times of crisis, especially hurricanes and storms with supplies and manpower as well as technical support. Throughout the years, BEC has enjoyed this partnership, and has dispatched teams from the Bahamas to assist several of its Caribbean counterparts through this arrangement. The coordination of emergency teams of linesmen to assist in the restoration of transmission and distribution systems after a hurricane or similar natural disaster is just one of the ways the Bahamas benefits from BEC’s partnership with CARILEC. Other benefits include:

  • High-quality training to upgrade the skills of personnel in the areas of engineering, technology, administration and management.
  • Regional conferences that allow for interaction among electricity stakeholders and utility professionals in various areas such as Public Relations & Corporate Communications, Executive Management, Engineering & Purchasing, Information Systems, Finance, Customer Service, Human Resource and Renewable Energy.
