What you can do before hurricane season
1. Update your BEC account phone number now.
- This is especially important during hurricane season or other emergencies because when you call us, our computers will recognize your phone number and match it to your BEC account automatically. This way you won't have to spend valuable time searching for your BEC bill, and we won't have to ask you where you live before responding to your service need.
2. Call your local emergency management office if you or anyone you know has special needs in case of evacuation. Look under
- "Bahamas National Disaster Center" in your phone directory or
- call directory assistance.
3. Stock up on
- non-perishable food
- medicine
- baby supplies and
- pet food.
4. Purchase bottled water. The American Red Cross recommends 1 gallon of water per person per day.
5. Check emergency equipment:
- flashlights
- battery-operated radios
- extension cords
- emergency generators, etc, and
- buy extra batteries.
6. Install an approved hurricane shutter system over windows and doors - or have on hand alternate coverings such as plywood.
7. Trim trees that are not near power lines and clear debris. Once a hurricane warning is announced, trash pickup is suspended.

3. Review evacuation routes in case you must evacuate.
4. Contact a veterinarian or kennel to arrange for safe sheltering for your pet if you must evacuate. Public shelters do not accept pets.
5. Fill your vehicle's gas tank.
6. Bring loose, lightweight objects such as lawn furniture inside.
