THE TECHNICAL CADET CORP PROGRAMME (TCCP)

was established in March, 1990 for students entering the tenth grade of secondary schools.

The programme is fully sponsored by Government Corporations such as the Bahamas Electricity Corporation, Water and Sewerage Corporation, Bahamas Telecommunications Company Limited and the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas.

The Technical Cadet Corps Programme is geared toward training students in the technical areas in which the Corporations specialize.

The main objectives of the programme are:

  • To seek out and train students who show some degree of interest and proficiency in technical-related fields;
  • To create an option for some of those students who might otherwise drop out of the school system for one or more of a number of social dislocations;
  • To provide exposure for students who show interest and who intend to pursue higher education in engineering and related fields; and
  • To establish and reinforce the kinds of discipline and attitudes necessary for job enrichment and national development .

The courses taught include Electronics, Electricity, Water Management, Engineering, Drawing, Engineering Science, Mechanical Technology, Radio and Television Engineering and Computer Studies. The courses are taught by trainers, technicians, and engineers employed by the Corporations/Utility Company. Trained teachers from the private and public school systems have been engaged to provide tutoring in English.

The programme begins in September of each year with approximately 100 tenth-grade students selected from all private and public secondary schools in New Providence. Once inducted as Cadets, they remain in the programme for three years.
