Apprenticeship Programs

The Bahamas Electricity Corporation has a long standing apprenticeship program that is geared towards preparing high school and college graduates to become skilled craftsman or technicians, and begin a rewarding career in the field of engineering.

 

The program involves academic training to pursue the City and Guilds of London Institute Certificate Courses in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Technology. BEC is presently a certified City and Guilds Examination Centre.

For the duration of the Apprenticeship Programme, students are always encouraged to work hard and to maintain a high standard of excellence – the minimum grade average accepted by BEC is 70%. 

The requirements for entering the craft apprenticeship program are:

  • 5 Bahamas Junior Certificates (B.J.C.'s in Math, English, General Science, Grade C or higher) or
  • Pre Technology Certificate (The College of The Bahamas G.P.A. 3.0) or
  • Equivalent technical college courses of study

The requirements for entering the Technician apprenticeship program are:

  • 5 G.C.E. O'levels/B.G.C.S.E.'s (Math, English and a Science Grade C or higher) or
  • Associate Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or Electronics (from C.O.B., with G.P.A. of 3.0), or
  • Equivalent technical and community college associate degree or technical diplomas

 

In addition to the Apprenticeship Programme the Training Department has simultaneously successfully provided other Technical Programs, including:  The Diesel Operators Course, Linesman Training Programme, Meter Mechanic Training, SF6 Switchgear Training, in addition to the ongoing Trade Testing of eligible employees.

These programs seek to develop and equip today’s employees with the necessary job skills required by the electric utility industry.
