Meet Denise White

"I enjoy my work, my environment and the camaraderie with many of my co-workers... BEC has afforded me the opportunity to give to my country in ways that I never thought I would. I have not had a dull moment in the past 18 years and 11 months."

Denise began her career at the Bahamas Electricity Corporation in November of 1988 as a Linesman Mate Trainee.

She says "I have never regretted that decision. For me the challenges went in steps. First I had to get up there, secondly I had to move around and work, and thirdly I had to get down. After a while I became more comfortable on the poles and at the end of the training I was given the Golden Spur Award for being the most improved candidate in the group. An award I still hold dear."

Denise was among the first female linesmen trained by BEC. As a Linesman, she acted in various positions. During Hurricane Andrew in 1992 when many of the staff were involved in restoration efforts throughout the islands, she was called upon to coordinate one of the crews in Nassau. "This was very interesting… I was frightened out of my wits. The other Linesmen in Construction had been sent to Eleuthera to help with the restoration efforts. Our restoration efforts in Nassau for hurricane Andrew showed me that when you need to find energy you thought you didn't have a hidden source appears. I think during hurricane Andrew I worked the hardest I have ever done in BEC. We rallied together and got the job done. Just before he retired, the Foreman I worked with during Hurricane Andrew commended me for the stamina and tenacity I displayed during that time. I still don't know where the energy came from."

Since then, she has worked in a number of areas including Revenue Protection, Payroll, Distribution, and System Control Departments. In the System Control Department she began as a Dispatcher, has since been promoted to Assistant System Controller and has acted briefly as System Controller.

"I have not had a dull moment in the past 18 years and 11 months. BEC has afforded me the opportunity to give to my country in ways that I never thought I would. I enjoy my work, my environment and the camaraderie with many of my co-workers. I have given of myself in many areas in the past. I find it rewarding to be a giver in every aspect of my life. It warms my heart to help to make things go well and smoothly. So my motto has been to give and not look only for what I can get and the blessings will come."
