Back to Press Release ListingNEW PROVIDENCE POWER OUTAGESTHE BAHAMAS ELECTRICITY CORPORATION PRESS RELEASE August 26th, 2010 The Bahamas Electricity Corporation wishes to apologize and provide an update to its consumers in New Providence on the disruption they have been experiencing to their electricity supply over the last couple of days. The outages were initially caused when two generators at our Clifton Pier Power Plant had to be taken off load. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the defects experienced, the full remediation effort will take at least four days. It is anticipated that repairs to one of these engines will be completed this evening effectively reducing the possibility of further outages due to this cause. Unfortunately as recent as last evening some load shedding activity did indeed take place commencing at approximately 8:30 pm and lasting through until 10:45 pm. Several areas identified were interrupted for periods of 1 – 1.5 hours each as a generator had to be shut down briefly to allow technicians to carry out necessary work. Some of these areas included Coral Harbor, Adelaide, Southwest Bay Road, Lyford Cay, Shirley Street, Bueno Retiro, Shirley Slope, Hillside Estates, Palmdale, East Bay Street, and the Soldier Road Industrial Park. The Corporation sincerely apologizes for these outages and wishes to ensure its customers that all possible actions are being taken to return the plant to full service and to reduce the need for load shedding during the peak load hours. While the Corporation will however make every effort to minimize any disruptions to its New Providence consumers, we take this opportunity to advise that the need may arise to disrupt supplies to areas in one to two hour intervals during this period. In this regard, for your convenience, a tentative schedule indicating the order in which Blocks will be affected is provided below in the event it becomes necessary for us to disrupt services.
