The Corporation

Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) operates generation, transmission and distribution systems throughout The Commonwealth of The Bahamas, an archipelagic nation. For more than 50 years, BEC has been committed to providing customers with safe, reliable electricity in the most cost-efficient manner possible. The Corporation serves approximately 85% of all electricity consumers in the nation.

Our Primary Mission and Objective is to provide safe, reliable and cost effective electricity for customers throughout our archipelago, and be a strong partner in building our nation for generations. Through a strong customer focus, professional development of employees and improved service delivery standards, BEC aims to position itself as the number one public Corporation of its size and character in the region.

It was established as a Government-owned public Corporation by the Electricity Act of 1956. It is governed by a Board of Directors and managed by an executive team led by a General Manager.

The Corporation employs a workforce of over 1000 highly skilled and innovative professionals, 100% of whom are Bahamians, and has an active and ongoing in-house training program for new staff members.

Service Territory

Although approximately 60% of the Country's population resides on New Providence Island, which is home to the capital city of Nassau, the Corporation's area of supply extends to all of the major Islands of the Bahamas with the exception of Grand Bahama and Inagua Islands. Altogether, it operates 29 generating plants at 25 Island locations.

The Corporation's Family Island Electrification Program (Phases I, II & III) brought power to all of the family of Islands. Plans are currently underway to provide electricity on Inagua Island, the southernmost Island of the archipelago, which had previously been supplied by a private company.
